Sadie Rose And Phantom Warrior

Sadie woke with a start. Her stomach ached with hunger and for a minute she couldn’t place where she was. She knew it wasn’t in the bed she shared with Opal and Helen. Sadie heard a groan and a whimper. Then she remembered. She was a captive along with Lost Sand Cherry, Gerda, Riley and Levi!

Book: Sadie Rose and the Phantom Warrior (Sadie Rose Adventure) by Hilda Stahl, Crossway Books, 1991

Genre: Historical Fiction
Target Audience: Girls 10-14
Subjects: Kidnapping, Family Relationships, Truth, Native Americans, Jealousy
Summary: Jeepers! Will they ever be safe again? Just as Riley and Sadie Rose get back from being kidnapped by the Malda family, they have to turn around and leave to rescue someone else and find themselves kidnapped yet again! This time they are kidnapped by the Indian warrior Riley refused to believe even exists! And if that’s not bad enough, their newly discovered cousin Gerda is with them. And that just doubles the amount of trouble. Gerda is an extremely spoiled city girl who has no clue how to survive in the outdoors and a selfish streak that makes her demand her way all the time – including getting Levi, the boy Sadie likes. Sadie Rose just wants to get back home!
Notes: The Phantom Warrior is the sixth of the Sadie Rose Adventures. This series tells of a twelve year old girl’s first year living in the Nebraska sandhills during the pioneer days. Sadie has a knack for getting into danger. The series focuses a lot on family relationships as Sadie lives with her mother, stepdad, older sister, older brother, younger sister and younger brother. It also focuses a lot on the hopes and dreams of marriage for the young girls. The culture was for girls to marry quite young so the characters, especially Sadie’s older sister focus heavily on trying to find a good husband. There is also a strong thread of forgiveness and the importance of telling the truth running through the series.
In this sixth book, the main character now shifts back to Sadie Rose. She may have learned how to show God’s love to her siblings and new stepfather, but this cousin that just arrived from Michigan makes her have to learn how to show God’s love to someone she doesn’t like all over again. Not only does the thought “I hate her” enter Sadie’s mind, the words come out too.

Philippians 2:1-3 – If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,  then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
