The Stolen Necklace

No one breathed. Every footstep below brought chills across the back of Jeff’s neck. If the witch doctor heard any movement from the loft, they could all end up in that prison cell with K.J…. or worse.

Book: The Stolen Necklace (Reel Kids Adventures) by Dave Gustaveson, YWAM Publishing, 1994

Genre: Adventure
Target Audience: Boys and Girls 11-15
Subjects: Missions, Sorcery/Witchcraft, Salvation, Prayer
Summary:  If this adventure gets any more adventurous the Reel Kids may never be able to go on another adventure again! First it’s sitting in a broken down car in the midst of a herd of elephants past the time they are supposed to be out of the wildlife park. Then it’s K.J. getting accused of stealing a necklace and having his passport taken. If he doesn’t find the missing necklace by the end of the trip, he won’t be allowed to leave the country with the others. Then it’s their team leader getting malaria and being hospitalized. Then it’s a poisonous snake in their room. Then it’s finding a group of slaughtered elephants left by poachers. Then it’s an encounter with a witch doctor trying to cast a sickness out of a young boy. Finally, the Reel Kids take on the witch doctor and join him in a challenge to see who serves the greater power. The challenge is simple. The one who makes it rain wins. If the rain doesn’t come, Jeff, K.J., Mindy, and Warren may not be leaving the country. They may not even be alive to try!
Notes: The Stolen Necklace is third in the Reel Kids Adventures, a series about a group of kids who go to other countries showing a Gospel presentation video and making films about the people who live there. In this one, the kids are in an African jungle, meeting up with native tribes and encountering opposition from a witch doctor in one of the tribes. The Gospel is presented to their guide who becomes a Christian. The kids are reminded to keep their trust in God as He proves Himself more powerful than the witch doctor. The series is definitely adventure focused rather than realistic. It’s meant to show some of the exciting things that happen on foreign missions trips.

1 Kings 18:37-39 – Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again." Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD--he is God! The LORD--he is God!"
