Dear Mr. Knightley

Thursday, November 21, 2013
“I’m sorry I launched into tonight’s events without addressing your letter. It arrived today and made one thing very clear: I need these letters – as they are, with no changes to our agreement. Thank you for the final chance to come to my senses. I can't believe I asked you. The moment I opened your letter and saw your signature, I panicked. I recalled all I'd told you, all you knew, and all I feared. I felt more exposed than in the article Kylie and I wrote. You know my heart.

Book: Dear Mr. Knightley: A Novel by Katherine Reay, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2013

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Target Audience: Girls 16+
Subjects: Orphans, Dating Relationships
Summary: An orphan girl with very little chance to better her future, Sam receives a huge opportunity. An anonymous benefactor has given Sam not only a full ride scholarship to a university, but is providing everything else she needs as well. The agreement is that Sam will write him letters, telling about what she is doing. This becomes a lifeline for Sam. There is someone out there who will listen to her every thought and offer no condemnation or rejection in return. As she goes through her years in college, her relationships, her challenges and delights, she pours it all out to Mr. Knightley.
Notes: A story in the tradition of Daddy Long Legs, the 1955 movie, Dear Mr. Knightley is the story of a girl who receives a full college scholarship and housing and wardrobe and everything else she needs from an anonymous benefactor that she writes letters to in exchange for the financial support. He falls in love with her through her letters and as they develop a relationship in person without him revealing he is Mr. Knightley, she falls in love with him. The spiritual elements are really focused on trust in God and other people. The girl has a lot of reasons to not let herself get too close to anyone, believing they will hurt her or leave her. She has to learn to open up and trust.
