“I lose my baby, my fiancé, and my mother in the same week? Just months after I lose my dad? How could you do this to me? I though, of everyone, you’d be the one to stand by my side.” “I’m not rejecting you. I’m getting you the help you need, if you’ll take it.”

Book: The Embittered Ruby (Diamond Estates) by Nicole O’Dell, Barbour Publishers, 2012

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Target Audience: Girls 16-20
Subjects: Dating Relationships, Teen Pregnancy, Friendship, Prejudice, Family relationships
Summary: Running away is becoming what Carmen does best. When problems come, when tough times come, just run away. Her mom moves her away from her boyfriend, away from New York, to hick town New Jersey. It doesn’t matter though. Carmen knows exactly how to get out: get Nate to get her pregnant. Then she can get married and move in with him. Problem solved. Right? Wrong. Getting pregnant just leads to more problems. Soon she’s left with only one option: go join the program for teen girls at Diamond Estates. But she’s not done running away and no one can make her do anything or keep her anywhere she doesn’t want to be.
Notes: This is the second  book in the Diamond Estates novels, a series about a kind of rehab and healing center for teen girls. Each book takes a young girl with a serious problem and shows how only through finding Jesus and getting support and making changes in their life, can they find the healing they so desperately need. It’s a good series for someone who needs to see a realistic portrayal of the struggles a teen girl faces and where hope can come from.
In this book, a girl is walking through life with an attitude that says she’s better than everyone else and doesn’t deserve the trials life has thrown at her. This attitude causes her to make some extremely foolish choices that lead to her going to Diamond Estates. But even there, she refuses to accept help, silently mocks everyone around her and runs away again. Breaking point doesn’t come at getting pregnant, at her boyfriend dumping her, at losing her baby, at getting kicked out of her mom’s house or even spending time at Diamond Estates. It takes a lot for someone with as much pride as Carmen has to reach the point where she’s willing to turn over control to Christ and let herself be changed. The book really focuses on the problems of the character and the power God has to change a life.
