“Put down your arm, Billy,” Josh whispered. But it was too late. The couple were looking right at them. Billy slowly put down his arm. The old man and woman walked toward them. Neither one looked very happy as they approached the old man and three boys.

Book: The Mystery In Lost Canyon by John Bibee, InterVarsity Press, 1997
Genre: Mystery
Target Audience: Boys 10-14
Subjects: Showing love to others, Crime
Summary: The boys are supposed to be on vacation with their dad, but before even one day has passed they’ve got two mysteries to solve: Who is the odd couple snooping around the ranch and why does the young wrangler girl seem out to get them? There’s rumors of a lost treasure, a strange old mountain man and soon, a missing horse. A normal trail ride turns into a dangerous terror filled trip down a mountain and the homeschool detectives are officially on the case.
Notes: This is the 7th in the Homeschool Detectives series, a series about six kids who are homeschooled and have a habit of stumbling across mysteries and then solving them. In this book, the boys learn about showing love to others even when they seem unloveable. A young girl is hurting and is desperate to prove herself, but no one notices her. So she acts out in anger and the boys have an opportunity to show Christ’s love with her.

1 Peter 5:6 – But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect
